The Perfect Clearwater Beach Day Trip from Orlando
When most people think of Orlando, they think of theme parks, but after spending several days exploring the area, I decided to take a break from the madness and head for the coast! Going to Clearwater ended up being one of my favorite days of the trip.
If you’re looking for an easy day trip from Orlando, here’s exactly how I spent a day in Clearwater Beach and why I think it’s worth adding to your Florida itinerary!

Is Clearwater Beach Worth Visiting From Orlando?
Absolutely! One of the things that surprised me most about visiting Florida was how easy it was to take day trips. While I had my own car in Florida, even if you had a rental car you can explore places beyond Orlando without much planning.
As someone from Southern Illinois, a two-hour drive barely registers as a road trip, so I loaded up the car, grabbed some coffee, and headed west toward the Gulf Coast.
Relax on Clearwater Beach
The first thing I noticed when I arrived in Clearwater was the sand. I’ve visited beaches in several places, but Clearwater still has some of the whitest sand I’ve ever seen!
Of course the weather decided to keep things interesting. Not long after I arrived, the skies opened up and it absolutely poured. I headed to a nearby shop to do a little souvenir shopping until the storm passed over. Luckily, in Florida, storms roll through quickly.
Once the weather cleared, I spent some time walking the beach, enjoying the warm water, and simply soaking up the fact that I was finally on a beach in Florida. I even spotted a dolphin swimming while I was in the water.

Visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium
After spending some time on the beach, I headed to Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
At the time, the aquarium was home to Winter, the famous dolphin featured in the movie Dolphin Tale. If you’re unfamiliar with Winter’s story, it’s worth looking up. Her journey inspired millions of people around the world and helped bring attention to marine animal rescue and rehabilitation.
One of the things I appreciated most about the aquarium was its focus on rescue work rather than large-scale entertainment. It’s a smaller attraction than some of the major Florida aquariums, but it offers a meaningful experience and an opportunity to genuinely learn about marine conservation.
Take a Sunset Dolphin Cruise
The highlight of my Clearwater day trip was a sunset dolphin cruise. Even though I didn’t actually spot any dolphins during the cruise itself, I still had a fantastic time. The sunset was absolutely beautiful!
The boat traveled through the harbor while the crew pointed out celebrity homes, luxury yachts, and some of Clearwater’s most beautiful and prominent waterfront properties.

Explore Pier 60
One of the most enjoyable surprises of my visit was spending time around Pier 60. When I visited, vendors had set up booths featuring local artwork, crafts, and handmade goods.
If your schedule allows, try to spend some time here after a day at the beach!

Tips for Visiting Clearwater Beach
Before you go, here are a few things I learned from my visit:
- Start early to maximize your beach time!
- Bring sunscreen, even if the forecast looks cloudy.
- Expect afternoon rain showers, especially during the summer months.
- Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore Pier 60.
- Consider booking a dolphin cruise in advance during busy travel seasons.
- Allow at least two hours each way for the drive from Orlando.
Final Thoughts
When I planned my Florida trip, Clearwater Beach wasn’t why I went, but it ended up being one of the most memorable parts of my trip! Between the white-sand beaches, dolphin sightings, marine life, and gorgeous Gulf Coast sunsets, it offered the perfect balance to the chaotic pace of Orlando.
If you have an extra day during your Orlando vacation, Clearwater Beach is absolutely worth the drive!
