11 Best Places to Eat in Skagway, Alaska
One of the questions I get asked most often by friends and family who visit is, “Where should I eat in Skagway?”
After living here for the past couple of years, I’ve eaten my way through most of the town at least once (and some places far more than I’d like to admit). While everyone has their own favorites, these are the restaurants I find myself recommending over and over again to friends, family, and visitors.
Whether you’re in town for a few hours on a cruise stop or spending several days exploring Southeast Alaska, these are some of the best places to eat in Skagway!

A Quick Note About Restaurant Access
Skagwayโs restaurant scene is seasonal. Most spots operate from May through September, and hours shift depending on cruise schedules and staffing. Always check current hours online, on Google Maps, or with a local before heading out.
Also of note: when the White Pass train returns or a big cruise ship unloadsโฆ seating can disappear in an instant. Weโre a small town, and our restaurants reflect that!
1. Skagway Fish Co. โญ (My Favorite)
If you only have time for one meal in town, this is the place. Right by the Skagway Small Boat Harbor and just off the Railroad dock, Skagway Fish Co. serves classic Alaskan dishes done right.
They make their own tartar sauce (amazing), and they serve sweet tea in the cutest fish bottles. Fun fact: those bottles are actually repurposed wine bottles, and you can sometimes find them at the liquor store across from the White Pass depot! Sweet tea is basically a unicorn in Alaska, so this feels like a little hidden treasure.
My picks: crab cakes, fish & chips, the Alaskan salmon dinner, the Admiral Lindsayโs Seafood Platter, Caesar salad.
2. Skagway Brewing Company
Known for their spruce tip ale and greenhouse-grown produce, Skagway Brewing Co. (โBrew Coโ to the locals) is a solid lunch or dinner stop with two floors of seating and a fun gift shop. Theyโve even been open most of the year recently.
My picks: any burger, the fish & chips (battered with spruce-tip ale), and the pretzels with beer cheese.
3. 1898 Burgers & Shakes โญ
This spot quickly became a favorite for both locals and visitors. Itโs fast, delicious, and consistent! Their smashburgers are the standout here, and the fries are absolute perfection. If you want something different, the Skagway Smashburger comes topped with salmon and sometimes they run specials.
My picks: the OG Smashburger (I add bacon), the crispy fries, and the chocolate shake.
4. Red Onion Saloon
A historic saloon-turned-restaurant (once a brothel during the Gold Rush), Red Onion is touristy and absolutely worth it. The period-dressed staff, eclectic decor, and lively atmosphere make it a classic Skagway experience.
They serve a surprisingly great brunch – mimosas included – and their brothel tour is a fascinating peek into local history.
My picks: nachos, quesadillas, pizza, and the chicken bacon ranch wrap.
5. The Station
A comfort-food staple and local favoriteโespecially in the shoulder seasons when itโs one of the few places still open. Think pizza, burgers, hearty specials, and a friendly, relaxed vibe.
My picks: the pizza, burgers, and I love their grilled cheese. We order the pizza a lot during our busy work season.
6. Glacial Coffeehouse
Perfect for a morning latte, a bagel sandwich, or a quick lunch. Youโll find baked goods, paninis, breakfast wraps, and a mix of locals and early-rising hikers fueling up before the day begins.
My picks: Caramel Macchiato and the Mabel sandwich.
7. Peppers (Food Truck)
Peppers serves Southwest-style burritos, rice bowls, and tacos from their busy corner on 3rd Avenue. Itโs fast, flavorful, and great for a quick bite. Seating is limited and outdoors only, and it gets packed on cruise days.
My picks: Cilantro Lime Chicken Tacos + a Mexican Coke.
8. Starfire (Food Truck)
Thai food in Alaska?! YUP, and it’s amazing!
If you want something different from the usual seafood-and-burgers lineup, Starfire is a standout with its Thai-inspired dishes. They used to have a full-blown restaurant, but itโs now a food truck with outdoor seating. They share the same corner as Peppers.
My picks: Pad Thai. Always Pad Thai.
9. The Sittinโ Sasquatch
A cute cafรฉ with fun Sasquatch-themed dรฉcor, creative drinks, and great people-watching. The main restaurant sits on Broadway across from our post office, and the coffee bar is now tucked behind the building. (The coffee is even better this year!)
My picks: grilled cheese for lunch, biscuits & gravy for breakfast.
10. Chilkoot Dining Room
For a quiet sit-down meal, the Chilkoot Dining Room offers classic Alaskan dishes in a charming hotel setting. This is as close to fine dining as Skagway gets, and coffee bar is also super convenient. It is located inside the Holland American Skagway Inn (formally known to us as the Westmark hotel).
My picks: Caesar salad and cedar-planked salmon.
11. Bonanza Bar & Grill
A casual spot right on Broadway with classic American eats and a laid-back vibe. Great for lunch or dinner if you want something quick, simple, and dependable. Their Tuesday taco special is tiny tacos, but well worth it – theyโre delicious!
My picks: chips & queso, berry margaritas, and the $2 tacos.
Skagwayโs food scene offers way more than youโd expect from a tiny, coastal Alaskan town. Whether youโre here for a cruise stop or a multi-day stay, these restaurants show off the best of our local flavor.
