How to Puppy-Proof Your Home

Bringing home a puppy is exciting, exhausting, and a little chaotic!

One minute they’re sleeping peacefully in your lap, and the next they’re trying to eat a phone charger, steal a shoe, or sprint through the house with something they definitely shouldn’t have like a dryer sheet.

If you’re bringing home a new puppy soon, here are 10 simple ways to make your home safer for both your pup and your belongings.

1. Hide or Secure Electrical Cords

Puppies explore the world with their noses and mouths, and any cords can look enticing to them.

Move chargers off the floor, bundle loose cords together, and hide them behind or underneath furniture whenever possible.

2. Remove Temptation from Low Shelves

Take a look around your home from puppy level – anything within reach is fair game! Decorative items, baskets, rugs, books, plants, and remote controls.

Basically, if it’s breakable, valuable, or chewable, move it higher until your puppy is older.

3. Use Baby Gates to Limit Access

One of the easiest ways to prevent accidents is to keep your puppy in a smaller area of the house at first.

Baby gates help block off stairs and rooms that aren’t puppy-ready. They also make potty training easier because you can keep your puppy in an area within your view.

4. Put Shoes Away Immediately

I think almost all of us dog owners have a shoe-chewing story. For us it was shoelaces and slippers!

Get into the habit of putting shoes in a closet or closed cabinet the moment you take them off.

5. Keep Blankets, Pillows, and Clothing Out of Reach

Many puppies love to chew fabric. The cute throw blanket you have draped over your couch may look enticing to your puppy. The same goes for coats and jackets hanging low enough to reach (think on the back of a chair).

Until your puppy can be trusted, keep soft items picked up and avoid leaving bedding in a crate if your puppy is actively chewing and shredding it.

6. Use Trash Cans with Lids

Trash cans are treasure chests in the eyes of most puppies.

Food scraps, paper products, dryer sheets, and other household waste can quickly become a problem if your puppy gets into them. A trash can with a secure lid is one of the easiest puppy-proofing upgrades you can make!

7. Check Your Houseplants

Some common houseplants can be toxic to dogs if chewed or ingested.

Before bringing your puppy home, identify any plants in your house and make sure they’re pet-safe. If you’re unsure, move them out of reach until you can verify they’re safe. I did a lot of Googling in my puppy era.

8. Store Cleaning Products and Medications Securely

Household cleaners, medications, and automotive products should always be stored in cabinets or areas your puppy can’t access.

Most adults don’t think twice about these items, but puppies are naturally curious and can get into surprising places including low cabinets and more.

9. Create a Dedicated Puppy Zone

Having a designated spot for your puppy’s toys, food, leash, treats, and supplies helps keep your home organized and makes daily routines easier.

Finding a spot for their food and water dishes, crate, and getting a toy bin can all help your puppy adjust and learn where their belongings go in their new home.

10. Make Your Yard Safe

If your puppy will have access to a yard, inspect it carefully before their first outdoor adventure.

Check fences for gaps, remove potential hazards, secure any chemicals or tools, and always supervise outdoor time while your puppy is learning boundaries.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a perfectly puppy-proof home to be a great dog owner. Your puppy will still find ways to surprise you. I know both of mine certainly did!

The ultimate goal is to create a safe environment where your puppy can learn, explore, and grow without getting into serious trouble.

A few simple changes before your puppy comes home can save you a lot of stress, protect your belongings, and help your new best friend settle in safely!
