25 New Puppy Essentials Every First-Time Dog Owner Needs
Bringing home a puppy is exciting… until you walk into the pet store and realize there are about 17 different aisles dedicated to things your dog supposedly “needs.”
I remember feeling completely overwhelmed when I went shopping for my first puppy as an adult. We thought we were prepared, but within 24 hours of bringing our puppy home, we realized we’d forgotten several things and even bought the wrong food. Oops!
The good news? You don’t need every gadget, toy, or puppy product on the shelf. Today I’m sharing what I would buy if I were bringing home a puppy again!

The Puppy Essentials
Before your puppy comes home, make sure you have:
- Collar
- Leash (I also like to have a backup leash)
- Food and water bowls
- Puppy food (ask the breeder, rescue, or shelter what they’re currently feeding)
- Training treats
- Safe chew toys
- Crate
- Travel carrier or pet taxi
- Poop bag dispenser & poop bags
- Puppy bed
- Cleaning supplies for inevitable accidents
These are the items you’ll use from day one!
Things You’ll Probably End Up Buying Later
There are a few items that aren’t necessarily urgent but quickly became useful in our house:
- Pet tag for collar
- Mat for food & water bowl
- Harness
- Pet wipes
- Puppy shampoo
- Brush/comb
- Nail clippers
- Dog toothbrush & dog toothpaste
- Puppy gate
- Toy storage bin
- Dog first aid kit
- Extra floor mats
- Hand vacuum
You don’t have to buy everything at once! Start with the essentials and add items as you learn your puppy’s personality and needs.
A Few Things I Learned the Hard Way
Every puppy is different. A toy that survives a Chihuahua puppy might last five minutes with a Husky. Some puppies can handle almost any food, while others have sensitive stomachs from day one.
You will not be a perfect dog parent and that’s okay. You’ll forget something. You’ll make mistakes. You’ll probably make an extra trip (or two) to the pet store. That’s just part of being a puppy parent!
What matters most is consistency, patience, and giving your puppy time to learn.
